Decorative Concrete in Tyler, TX

Not every nice slab is stamped. Decorative concrete covers lots of ways to change how a surface looks without a big jump in complexity: color, texture, pattern and cut lines. If you want something a bit better than plain gray, but aren't sure what to ask for, this page will help you sort it out.

Exposed aggregate concrete surface with small stones

Decorative Options

Exposed aggregate

The top layer of cement paste is washed or etched away so the small stones show. It has a natural, pebbly feel and good grip. It's popular on drives, walks and pool areas.

Integral and broadcast color

Pigment goes in the mix, or color hardener is added on the surface. You get tan, brown, charcoal, terracotta and more. Colors can vary from batch to batch, so we try to pour a section in one go.

Acid stain and water-based stain

Stain reacts with or soaks into the surface and gives a mottled, natural look. Results can't be fully predicted. It tends to look like stone or leather rather than paint.

Saw-cut patterns and borders

Cut lines can form squares or diamonds, or frame the edges. Borders with a different color or texture can make a simple walk look planned. See stamped concrete if you want full patterns.

We only offer the finishes we can do well. If you ask for something outside our work, we'll say so. Not all decorative systems suit all slabs, and some need a certain age or surface condition.

Preparation and Drainage

Decorative work shows every flaw. That means the base, the grade, the mix and the finishing all have to be steady. Water ponding on a colored slab leaves marks. We plan slopes and joints first, then the look.

How a Decorative Job Runs

  1. We talk about the space, the style and the color range.
  2. We look at samples or past work and agree on a finish.
  3. Base work and forms are done like any quality pour.
  4. Concrete is placed and finished, with color and texture added at the right time.
  5. Joints are cut and the slab is cured.
  6. Sealer goes on after the slab is ready.

Price Factors

Cost goes up with color, texture, detail work, sealer and labor. A simple saw-cut border is not like a multi-color design. It depends on area and site conditions too. We can only give a true price after an on-site visit.

Upkeep

Sealed decorative concrete usually needs resealing every so often. Clean with mild soap and water, avoid harsh chemicals, and put felt pads under furniture. Colors can fade in the sun over time, thats normal. Read how to maintain outdoor concrete surfaces.

Questions to Ask

  • Can I see a sample or finished job with this finish?
  • How much will the color vary?
  • What sealer will you use and how often do I reseal?
  • Is the finish slippery when wet?

Frequently asked questions

+What is the difference between stamped and decorative concrete?

Stamped is one kind of decorative concrete. Decorative also includes stain, color, exposed aggregate and saw-cut designs.

+Can I add color to my old concrete?

Sometimes. Stains, dyes and overlays can work on sound surfaces, but results depend on the slab's age and condition.

+Is exposed aggregate a good choice for Tyler weather?

It grips well when wet and hides dirt. Sealing helps protect it from stains and keeps the stones in place.

+Will the color match the sample exactly?

Not exactly. Mix, weather and finishing all affect the final color, so expect some variation.

+Does decorative concrete need sealing?

Most finishes do better with a sealer, and it needs redoing from time to time.

+Do you do polished concrete floors?

We can talk about decorative floor finishes for garages and shops. Ask about what's right for your slab in the estimate.
